Air Fried Aloo (Potato) Pies with Apple Chutney

Air Fried Aloo (Potato) Pies with Apple Chutney

These Air Fried Aloo Pies with Apple Chutney are quite delectable. Air-Fried dough with mouth-watering potato filling topped with spicy Apple Chutney, so good!. These come in at half the calories of a regular deep-fried aloo pie and taste just as good, if not better!

What is Aloo Pie?

Aloo Pie is a Trinidadian dish made up of a simple dough that is filled with seasoned soft potatoes then fried. It can be eaten plain or topped with different toppings such as chutneys, chickpeas, and hot sauce.

Notes

The dough should be soft but not sticky once it comes together. You do not need to knead the dough much, just lift and gently fold it over a couple of times to bring it together. You can use any pepper of your choice in the filling and chutney such as pimento, habanero, poblano to your liking. I used chili pepper that has a kick to it but not overly spicy. Once you mix the potato filling this is the time to taste test for salt and any additions you may want to add such as more cumin or pepper. When the pies are done air frying they may seem stiff but will soften up nicely after a few minutes. I like to place a damp paper towel over them then cover them with a kitchen towel. Store these in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave for about 45 seconds to 1 minute. Any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Lets make the dough!

Add 2 cups flour in a large bowl. On one side add salt and baking powder, on the other side add sugar then yeast on top of sugar. Stir.
Starting adding water a little at a time, using a wooden spoon or clean hands gently mix. You’re looking to form a soft dough.
Use hands to gently knead dough to form a ball. Add 1 tbsp. of flour at a time if needed. Do not overwork the dough.
The dough should look like this and soft to touch but not sticky
Cover with a damp paper towel and set aside, preferably in a warm area.

Potato Filling

Add cubed potatoes into cold water with 1/2 tsp salt and bring to a boil. Cook until fork tender about 8 minutes.
Drain the potato and add it to a bowl. Add cilantro, onions, garlic, salt, cumin, pepper mash with a fork just to break up potatoes and combine ingredients. Set aside to cool a little.

Apple Chutney

Add chopped apple, garlic, cilantro, pepper, lime juice, salt, black pepper and water to a food processor. Pulse until all is well chopped and combined.
Finished apple chutney. Pour into a dish and set aside,

Place dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into 8 equal pieces of dough. You can use a food scale to weigh them equally.
Roll out dough to about 5 to 6 inches and place 1/4 cup of potato filling in the center of the dough.
Bring together the ends while pinching to stick.
Use fingers to gently spread them out through dough.
You can use a fork to seal the ends as well. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
Heat your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 minutes. Then spray the tray with nonstick cooking spray. Place 2 pies in at a time depending on how big your air fryer is and spray the tops with nonstick cooking spray. Air fry for 5 minutes stopping to turn and spray around 1.30 minutes.
Finished Aloo Pies.
Slice the top and add in apple chutney. Enjoy!
