Naan Bread

Naan Bread

Naan bread is my favorite to order at an Indian restaurant. They are a leavened flatbread that are baked in a tandoor oven. I have made these on a non stick frying pan, cast iron and grill. On the grill, they will have grill marks instead of black spots. Taste remains the same. Serve with curries, stews, veggies or use it as you would pitas, flatbread or even as a pizza dough.

Traditionally naan is serve with butter on top, I have omitted the butter in this recipe to make this smartpoints and calorie friendly. If you must add, remember to count! Hope you enjoy!

Delicious Homemade Naan Bread

By:

Ingredients
  • 2 cups bread flour
  • 1 tsp yeast
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup -1 tbsp warm water
  • Pam spray
Directions
  • Step 1 Add flour, yeast, sugar and salt to a bowl and mix
  • Step 2 Add warm water and by hand mix dough until it comes together. Knead for 3-5 minutes. Spray bowl with Pam spray and place in a bowl. Cover with damp towel and leave out in a warm area to rise for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Step 3 After 30 minutes at least, divide dough into 8 even pieces. I use my food scale like this one for even measurements EatSmart ESKS-01 Precision Pro Digital Kitchen Scale, Silver.
  • Step 4 Roll each piece of dough into a ball and set on a cookie sheet sprayed with pam spray to rise again, leaving enough space to rise in between each dough. Cover with damp kitchen towel. Let rise for an hour or more.
  • Step 5 To start making the naan, place a non stick frying pan or cast iron on high heat.
  • Step 6 On a lightly floured surface, press down dough ball with fingers
  • Step 7 Roll out dough to about 6 and 3/4 inch diameter . Place on hot pan and cook for about 30 seconds or until you see little bumps start forming pictured below
  • Step 8 Using a tongs, flip over and cook for a couple more seconds, about 20. Lift to look for brown spots and flip again. Dough should start swelling or puffing up. Remove and place on a kitchen towel to cool. Serve once its cooled a little or wrap in foil. These can be refrigerated for a few days and reheat in the microwave.
